Hot to Watch is sponsored by Vogue Salon in Laguna Beach.
Baruch Kaufman is a Laguna Beach resident, jewelry designer, an up-and-coming independent film producer, a new father, and he is a passionate intellectual deeply committed to progress.
Kaufman manages Gem Mountain Studios retail jewelry stores, a family owned business located next to The Cliff restaurant overlooking the sea in Laguna Beach and in Beverly Hills on Canon Drive.
Kaufman designs about 60% of Gem Mountain Studios’ handmade pieces. His flirty, swirly, dangling vintage earrings and pendants are easily distinguishable. Kaufman practices environmental consciousness by using laboratory grown gems, which may be responsible for the affordability of his jewelry. He has exhibited his work at the winter Sawdust Festival for the past 4 years, and 2014 marks his 3rd year at the summer Sawdust Festival.
The life-enriching-arts lover is entirely too busy-minded to stop at designing jewelry and managing stores. Kaufman, who earned a BFA in film production and an MBA from Chapman University, started Nighthawks Entertainment, an independent film production company, in 2013 with partner James B. Cox. As of this writing, Kaufman has raised $40,000 of the $100,000 budget required to begin filming a sci-fi thriller in January 2015. Kaufman plans to raise more money through the crowd-funding Kickstarter platform in July.
Kaufman’s philosophy is to be fair and treat people well, “You are only as good as your word. Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” he says. But, there’s more to Kaufman than that: Radiating from his charismatic persona is an undeniable emotional depth. He interacts with people respectfully; he demonstrates compassion; and, he offers conscientious criticism designed to improve quality of life.
Kaufman’s girlfriend, Rachel Goberman, current president of the Sawdust Festival, gave birth to the couple’s first child in February.
